Summer is here! But California surfers know that this isn’t the most consistent time of year to surf pumping–or uncrowded–waves. While summer still provides plenty of waves and warm days to relax at the beach, you might benefit from a bit more foam to increase the wave count in crowded lineups and soft surf. We asked head shaper Dan O’Hara and the rest of our San Diego team for their top boards recommendations to surf in San Diego this summer.
The Go2: Best Shortboard to Surf San Diego
The Go 2 is an all-conditions board that you can rely on when the waves start pumping. Blake Ferraro, team rider and sales manager, designed this board alongside head shaper Dan O’Hara to perform in knee-high to overhead surf. This is perfect for San Diego summers where usually the surf is smaller but there are still some surprise south swells.
The Pescador: Best Midlength
If you’re over groveling every day during a bad run of swell, it might be time to consider a mid length. The Pescador is a good first choice for the mid-curious since it resembles a retro fish (the gateway to mid-lengths). This board will let you cruise past the longboarders while still allowing you to maneuver in the pocket if a section stands up.
The LHP: Best Longboard
For the surfers who’d rather spend summer working on their cross step while waiting for winter swells. The LHP is our premier high performance longboard. Take advantage of summer beach days and extend your time in the water with this model. The LHP is a nose-rider with the responsiveness of a much smaller board.
